Do you feel like you are always tired? It can be super frustrating to get a full nights sleep, but still end up waking up tired and groggy. Plus, it’s more than just a simple annoyance: daytime fatigue can have a host of negative effects on virtually every aspect of our lives. From our careers to our love life, getting adequate (and quality) sleep is essential. If you’re tired of being tired all the time, keep reading.
Why Do I Keep Waking Up Tired?
We get this question a lot. Why am I always sleepy? Why do I keep waking up tired? Why does it seem like I never get enough sleep, even if I’m in bed for 9 hours! Well, sleep can be tricky for some folks, and there’s a lot of different factors that contribute to sleep quality and duration. We’ve compiled some common causes of sleep issues that can leave folks waking up tired – see if any of them sound like you!
1. Not Getting Enough Sleep
First and foremost, are you getting enough sleep? Most research suggests that 7-8 hours of sleep per night is ideal for most people. With that said, everyone is different, so you’ll need to fine-tune these guidelines to fit you. But, needless to say, if you’re waking up feeling tired, there’s a good possibility you’re simply not getting enough sleep!
2. Getting TOO MUCH Sleep
Believe it or not, getting too much sleep can be nearly as harmful as getting too little. Research suggests that getting more than 9 or 10 hours per night can be harmful to health. Again, this will differ for everyone, but if you’re pushin’ up against the 9.5, 10-hour mark, you might actually consider cutting back on the ZZZ’s to see how you feel.
3. Getting Poor Quality Sleep
You can be in bed for 8 hours, but only get an hour or two of actually restful sleep. There are some steps you can take to improve your sleep quality, including:
- Stop drinking caffeine after noon or so. Caffeine can disrupt sleep cycles
- Limit alcohol consumption. Alcohol might help you get to sleep, but it will be poor quality sleep.
- Keep your room dark and quiet. Purchase heavier blinds/curtains, if need be.
- Try using “white noise”, such as an air purifier, fan, etc.
- Limit screen time before bed – i.e., try to spend the last hour or so before bedtime NOT using any sort of screen. That means no Netflix, no Facebook on your phone, etc.
- Get more exercise. When you exercise more frequently, your body will naturally sleep better as it needs the recovery time more.
4. Eating Unhealthy Foods
If you eat an unhealthy diet, you are more likely to feel sleepy during the day, even if you sleep well at night. Foods high in sugar and/or caffeine cause a temporary energy boost, followed by a long “crash”. Foods high in fat and processed carbs are also notorious for causing daytime sleepiness. So, if you are pretty sure that you’re actually sleeping pretty well, but you still feel always tired, your diet might be to blame.
5. Having an Uncomfortable Mattress
An uncomfortable mattress can leave you tossing and turning all night long, unable to get a good night’s rest. If you’ve been putting off getting a new mattress due to the cost, consider this: we spend about 1/3 of our lives in bed, and yet most of us hesitate to spend money on a quality mattress! 6. Having an Actual Medical Condition
If you are regularly waking up tired, it’s possible you may actually have a medical condition that is affecting your sleep quality. Sleep apnea is a common one, but there are tons of conditions, diseases and disorders that can affect sleep quality. If you’re concerned, speak with your doctor today.
