Composition: How it’s Made
Tuft and Needle is made of two layers and a comfort cover
Tuft and Needle mattresses are made up of a cover and two layers. Rather than making multiple layers of foams and/or coils, Tuft & Needle has focused on just two layers. One of the layers is your comfort layer and the other one focuses on support. Things get started with the cover. The cover is made up of a blend of polyester and Tactel. If you’re unfamiliar with Tactel, it’s a substitute for cotton. You’ll notice that the cover is stretchy and thin. It’s thin because it allows you to feel the comfort layer more easily. It also is breathable, allowing air to flow freely through the mattress, which will help with temperature regulation. If you sleep hot, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how cool the Tuft & Needle remains.
Under the cover is your first layer, which is made of 3” of a specific proprietary foam made for Tuft & Needle. If you experience back pain or need pressure relief because of other pain, this is the layer that will keep you comfortable and reduce your pain. This layer is also responsible for the bounce in the mattress. While there is some contouring to your form, overall the mattress is responsive to your movements, so you won’t feel like you’re getting stuck.
Making up the rest of this 10” mattress is the support base. This is 7” of poly foam. Think of this as the foundation of your mattress. It determines how durable your mattress will be and gives it the proper shape to support your body as you sleep or lounge on the bed.
How Comfortable is a Tuft and Needle Mattress?
Soft yet firm, you can feel both layers of the Tuft & Needle mattress evenly
The standard in bed-in-a-box mattresses is often medium-firm when it comes to comfort level. One of the reasons for this is that it will be suitable to a bigger range of sleepers. Most medium-firm mattresses are supportive enough for back sleepers or side sleepers. The same can be said if you sleep on your stomach or switch positions through the night. Tuft & Needle also falls within that medium-firm range, though due to the two-layer design many feel that it is on the softer end of the scale.
- Firmness: If you want something truly firm, Tuft & Needle might not have what you need. The nice thing about this mattress is that when you lay down you immediately feel the soft comfort level. As you lay you begin to feel the firmness from the support layer, as well. Both layers are represented and can be felt. Overall, it’s about a 7 on the firmness scale.
- Sinkage: As the top layer is the comfort layer, you will sink into this layer so that it can hug your curves and keep you comfortable. That said, you do not sink in a way that makes you feel like you can’t move. The mattress is incredibly responsive to your movements and while it cradles you, not much more sinking occurs than that.
- Motion Transfer: The motion transfer on a Tuft and Needle mattress is comparable to what you’d feel on a latex mattress. If your partner tosses and turns you may not feel it at all. Really it depends on how light of a sleeper you are. If the smallest things wake you up, then you will feel it. Otherwise, motion transfer is minimal and shouldn’t bother most sleepers.
“Mattress Magic”: Is the Tuft and Needle Mattress a Good Bed for Sex?
The comfort layer makes all the difference
One of the coolest things about the Tuft and Needle is that you feel both the comfort and the support when you’re laying down. This will serve numerous benefits when you consider it along the lines of intimacy. For starters, the comfort level will hug your curves and it relieves pain and pressure. Despite being foam, Tuft & Needle is very responsive, and it will move with your body, not against it. In other words, the mattress is going to work with you, not make it harder for you to move. While it is soft in a lot of ways, the mattress is also firm enough to offer the support you need to be comfortable.

“So far very comfortable nights sleep compared to old mattress (tempur pedic). Good balance of soft but supportive.” – Dan

Tuft and Needle let me buy with confidence knowing you have 100 nights to decide with no risk. I only needed one night to know this was finally the mattress for me. Thank you!” – Michelle
