The Layla Mattress is one of the best pregnancy mattresses. It’s an all-around comfortable, quality mattress at a very reasonable price. What really sets it apart though is its dual-sided design. One side of the Layla mattress is a medium-firm, and if you flip it over you get a medium-soft. This adds some versatility to the bed and gives you more options than a standard mattress.

Another reason that this is a good pregnancy mattress is that it sleeps very cool. It features an advanced air flow layer that helps to keep the mattress cool. On top of that, the outer layers of foam have been infused with copper. Copper is an excellent conductor, so it helps to distribute body heat and help you sleep cool and comfortable. The cover is also super-soft, and breathable. Since many pregnant women tend to experience night sweats and temperature swings, these are valuable perks to have in your bed.

Layla offers a risk-free 120-night trial – so you have a full 4 months to test it out! It’s quite affordable, and you can also use code SLEEPZOO to save $100 off any Layla mattress! The Importance of a Good Bed During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, the body undergoes significant changes and increased stress. In many cases, this can result in reduced sleep duration and lower sleep quality. In some cases, poor sleep quality can lead to pregnancy complications, so it’s vital to do what you can to get better sleep.

“Sleep appears to get worse in pregnancy in many, even women who do not have a preexisting sleep disorder,” says Dr. Ghada Bourjeily of Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Sleep quality will get worse for the majority of women during pregnancy. However, it’s still quite important to do what you can to minimize the disruptions. That starts with being aware of the changes your body is going through.

“As your pregnancy progresses, your sleep patterns become similar to those of a newborn infant. The amount of deep (non-REM) sleep you get decreases, and REM sleep increases…the state of sleep in which you are more aware of your environment and arouse from sleep more easily,” says Dr. Sears

According to experts like Dr. Sears, pregnant women will spend more time in stages of sleep that result in more frequent arousal. That means a comfortable mattress is even more important. It also means that you should seek out a bed with minimal motion transfer, so that your partner’s movements don’t wake you up in the night.

Tips for Sleeping Well During Pregnancy

Beyond getting the best mattress for pregnancy, there are some other steps you can take to help improve sleep during pregnancy:

  • Try sleeping on your (left) side – if you’re normally a back sleeper, you may try out laying on your side. This can help to alleviate back pain cased by your growing belly. It is thought that sleeping on your left side is more beneficial, as it allows for increased blood flow to the uterus.
  • Stay cool – pregnancy often increases body heat, leading to some sweaty, hot nights. Choose a mattress with good cooling, and run a fan or open a window if need be.
  • Elevate your upper body – if you find that you’re having difficulty breathing at night, propping up your upper body can help. This can be achieved with an adjustable bed frame, or by propping yourself up with pillows.
  • Address cramps – many pregnant women report sleep disruptions due to leg cramps, restless leg syndrome and similar issues. If this is a problem for you, do what you can to address the issue. That means getting enough folate/folic acid in your diet (or with supplements), using heating pads, etc.
  • Speak with your doctor – some sleep disruptions during pregnancy are normal – but you should still speak with your doctor about them. They may be able to recommend specific treatments or even mild medications to help you sleep better.

Our Credentials

Experience – Our team is fascinated by the world of sleep. We work to optimize our own sleep lives, while sharing helpful tips and tricks with our readers. The owner of the site is Chris Brantner, a Certified Sleep Science Coach that has been featured in Huffington Post, Forbes, NBC News and more.

Testing – We test dozens of mattress models to identify the most comfortable and well-built beds available. We do our best to test in a variety of sleep positions, using a variety of test subjects to get the most useful data.

Research – While testing is the focus, we also thoroughly research each mattress we recommend. We look not only at specs and features but also at third-party customer reviews. This data helps to round out our own findings from hands-on testing.

How We Chose

Cooling – I don’t know about you, but when I was pregnant I couldn’t get cool enough. Having a mattress that has that nice soft layer of cool foam/gel under my sheets would have been so wonderful. Sure, it’s not mandatory, but it’s one comfort that you’ll certainly appreciate especially if you are hot and pregnant.

Good Support – How your mattress supports your body will determine how well you sleep. I’ve written about mattresses for heavier sleepers and as you gain weight from your pregnancy you will likely have needs for a similar mattress. The thicker the mattress, the less you’ll sink, and the more comfortable you’ll be as a result.

Body Contouring – If you choose a foam mattress you’ll realize that when you lay down the bed seems to form to your body. This is excellent for your spine but also can help reduce any back pain you might experience. The best mattress for pregnancy needs to offer good support, and it needs to reduce any pain you might be feeling in your back from carrying your child.

Adjustability – If you’re having a hard time sleeping in a flat position an adjustable frame might be just the thing you need. This will allow you to sleep with your legs bent up or your upper body slightly elevated. This will allow you to find an easier way to sleep in the most comfortable positions possible.
