Why Latex?

Latex mattresses are known for their signature “bounce”. Basically, the material has a very quick response time. This provides a springy, bouncy-yet-supportive feel that many people enjoy.

Latex is also very breathable, so it’s good for those who tend to sleep hot. The best latex mattresses are quite comfortable all around, providing a great combination of support, softness and bounce.

Lastly, latex is a natural material that is extracted from rubber trees. It does not harm the trees, so it’s considered a sustainable practice. Thus, latex may appeal to environmentalists and those who prefer natural products. It also tends to off-gas less than synthetic foams.

What is Latex? Are There Different Types?

Latex is made from the sap of the rubber tree (hevea brasiliensis). The sap is extracted using a tapping technique that leaves the trees standing – so latex is considered a relatively sustainable material to use in manufacturing.

From there, the sap is processed in one of two ways:

Talalay process – “Talalay” latex is made using a blend of air, synthetic additives and natural latex sap. It results in a softer-feeling foam, but is typically more expensive than standard Dunlop latex.

Dunlop process – “Dunlop” latex is more common, and can be made natural, synthetic or in a blend. It results in a firmer foam.

In addition to these different latex processing methods, there are also different types of latex: natural, synthetic, and blended. Natural latex is expensive, so it’s rare to find a pure natural latex mattress. Synthetic latex is cheaper, yet obviously less natural and sustainable. Blended is more common, and uses a mix of both natural latex and synthetic latex. Some manufacturers will also use different forms of latex in different layers of the mattress.

There’s no single “best” form or style of latex, as each has unique pros and cons. Some people prefer to shop for a 100% natural latex mattress – but keep in mind these are typically the most expensive of the bunch.

Our Credentials

You’ve seen our picks for the best latex bed, but what makes us qualified to make these recommendations?

Experience – our experienced team is mildly obsessed with sleep. We have a lot of industry experience, and our fearless leader is Chris Brantner, a Certified Sleep Science Coach. His work has been featured in publications including The Huffington Post, NBC News, Bustle and others.

Testing – we physically test all the beds we recommend. Our process is quite involved, and consists of sleeping on each bed in various positions. We also have multiple people with different body types sleep on each bed and provide feedback, so we can get a wider understanding of how each mattress will perform for different folks.

Research – while our own testing is always the primary focus, we also conduct a lot of research. We research individual materials that are used to make each bed in order to determine it’s potential lifespan. We look at tons of latex mattress reviews from real customers to see how people like their beds. And, we look into the morals and customer service standards of each company we consider recommending.

How We Picked the Best Latex Mattress

We spent a lot of time looking for the best latex mattress of 2018. These are the factors we focused on:

Comfort – this is an obvious one, yet it’s very important. We chose beds that felt comfortable throughout the night, and that our whole team enjoyed. We tested each bed in a number of sleep positions to get a better feel for the overall comfort of each mattress.

Composition – not all foams are created equally, and not all latex mattresses use the same materials. We chose beds that are made with durable materials that will stand up to the test of time.

Motion transfer – motion transfer refers to how much the bed moves when you change positions or get out of bed. This is a very important factor for couples. Latex beds CAN be overly bouncy, resulting in more motion transfer than necessary. So, we only picked models with great motion isolation so you won’t disturb your partner.

Value – we love helping our readers get a great deal on a great mattress, so we picked models that offered excellent value in their price range. For even more savings, head over to our mattress coupons page.

Perks – while choosing a great bed is the most important aspect of the mattress purchasing process, it’s also good to look for extra perks like risk free trials, excellent warranties, and good customer support. All the mattresses we recommend offer at least 90 day risk-free trials, at least 10 year warranties, and great support.
