Just as electricity revolutionized the modern household at the turn of the 20th century, digital technology and the internet are currently revolutionizing our homes and all the junk we stuff inside them to much in the same way. Of particular interest to technology manufacturers these days is sleep, one of the most important activities we engage in each day. All sorts of new smart sleep products are hitting the market and changing our relationship with our unconscious hours. Now, in a sign that the ‘dumb,’ analog mattresses of the 20th century will soon go the way of the typewriter, smart mattress maker Eight has been named one of the most innovative companies of 2018. Is Big Tech trying to get in your bed?
Eight was been named to Fast Company’s annual ranking of what it calls the “World’s Most Innovative Companies” for 2018. The American business magazine publishes the list every year, ranking companies based on input from Fast Company editors, reporters, and contributors. Eight was ranked eighth (what else?) on the Fast Company’s “Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in the Consumer Electronics” list behind Apple, Amazon, Nintendo, Peloton, Sony, Lego, and Ring. The company’s signature product is its Smart Mattress which contains built-in sensors which measure heart and breathing rate, sleep phases, hours slept, and quality of sleep. The mattress can even sync with other smart home appliances to optimize users’ sleeping environment and ensure better rest.
In response to being named to Fast Company’s list, CEO Matteo Franceschetti says his company is focused on providing people with the tools to not only improve their sleep health, but better understand their own bodies in the process:
With over 20,000 people sleeping on a smart mattress and more than 10 million hours of sleep tracked to date, Eight is on track to build the largest sleep database in the world. Eight took a conventional consumer product, the mattress, and enhanced it with technology to help people understand their health and ultimately improve the way they live.
